Here Comes Another Milestone
Tomorrow marks the last day of Eliot's 2nd phase (out of 5) of treatment. This one was called Standard Consolidation and it included 3 spinal taps and oral chemo and some chemo put in his port. It, like the first phase (which was called induction) was 28 days long.
The next phase - the 3rd of 5 - is called Standard Interim Maintenance. They say it will give us a taste of what the last 3 years of his treatment will be like. They say its kind of an easy stretch of treatment. It is 56 days long and barring disaster starts on Thursday.
Eliot will get 2 shots of chemo in his port during this phase. He'll get chemo through a spinal tap once. He'll get 2 kinds of chemo orally and he'll take steroids again orally. Thank goodness the steroids will only last for short 5 day stretches. From what I can tell we might only have to go to the doctor's office once in March and once in April - or maybe just twice both months. That will be a welcome change.
The other amazing thing is this. Unless something really unexpected happens in the next 2 days March 1st 2007 will mark the beginning of the last 3 years of Eliot's treatment. They determine the end of treatment date based on when you start Standard Interim Maintenance. So March 1st is the big day. March 1st 2010. March 1st, 2010 is a Monday so I'm guessing his final treatment will either be Thursday, February 25 2010 or Thursday March 4, 2010.
This is a very cool thing. March 4 is my favorite day of the year. It is a sentence all on its own. March forth. How cool would that be if Eliot's final treatment happened on March 4th.

It is so cool that he is doing so well. I love it that the last time I saw him he seemed so happy, compared to the dismal first month :(

Update on Austin whose grandpa (also an Episcopal priest) wrote to Eliot earlier.
I always think of you on March 4 Forth! That would be a very good day to end treatment!
